The Gizzy Vegas Shoot is a prize money archery shoot hosted annually by Gisborne Archery Club. You do not need to be affiliated to a national archery body to participate. This is a very popular shoot with a capacity for up to 60 entries.
It is open to Compound, Recurve and BAREBOW archers. All archery equipment should meet WA requirements. Arrow size is up to 27 (as in 27/64ths of an inch). Arrows sized 27 will not be accepted with arrow wraps.
Target faces will be 40cm full face or triangle multi-spot. It is the archer’s choice to shoot on full or spot faces chosen at the time of shoot. Scoring is 10-zone.
The shoot consists of two Vegas ranking rounds on day 1, followed by non-elimination match-play and medal matches on day 2.
In 2026 we are introducing a new division for Barebow. If you would like to shoot 2 bow types and compete for the Combined Trophy you will now have the chance to compete with Compound/Recurve or Compound/Barebow. There is no allowance for Recurve/Barebow.
The date for this year’s shoot is the 23/24 May 2026.

Shooting procedure
The overall winners for all divisions will be determined by ‘Non-Elimination Matchplay’. The ranking for the ‘Non-Elimination Matchplay’ will take place on the first day of the competition. The ‘Non-Elimination Matchplay’ will take place on the second day of competition.
Ranking rounds
Ranking will consist of 2 x Vegas Rounds, each of which will consist of 30 scoring arrows.
Four ends (12 arrows) practice/sighting arrows per Vegas Round.
3 arrow ends. Each 3 arrow end will have a 120 second (2 minute) time frame allowance with 10 seconds to the line preparation time.
The compound line may run in one double detail and if more than 30 entries the extra will shoot with the recurve line.
The recurve line may run in one double detail and if more than 30 entries the extra will shoot with the compound line.
Both Recurve and Compound will shoot top/bottom.
The first 15 arrows of each Vegas Round shall be shot into either the top or bottom target face (whichever has been allotted to them). The second 15 arrows shall be shot into the opposite target face.
It is the archer’s responsibility to place their own target face at the commencement of shoot. It is the archer’s responsibility to change their target face after the first 15 arrows of each ranking round. Target faces to be placed with wording the correct way up. Nominated judges will inspect the placed target faces to ensure they are placed correctly. Nominated judges will also inspect target faces periodically to ensure clear scoring zones.
The bottom target face whether ‘Detail A’ or ‘Detail B’ will always shoot first in each end.
Archers will be placed into scoring groups of either 2 or 3. Double scoring will be completed accurately. All details on the score sheet should be completed and on completion both score sheets should be taken directly to the DOS for recording and collation.
No score will be accepted unless the score sheet has been completed fully and accurately.
In the event of ties, scores will be ranked by count-back. Hits, X’s then 10’s, 9’s etc. In the event of exact count-back a one arrow measured shoot-off will take place immediately after the ranking round.
There has been an allowance for more than 30 archers in either the compound or recurve divisions. If this is the case the number of archers exceeding 30 in either division will shoot the ranking round where the spaces are available. This may mean that some compound archers shoot the ranking round with the recurve archers or vice a versa.
Line calls may be requested when one or more archers in a scoring group disagree with any arrow call. In this event, 3 nominated line callers will independently and secretly call the line-call of which the majority will determine the final call. There will be a minimum of 5 line-callers nominated for the entire event.
Non-Elimination Matchplay
Two ends (6 arrows) practice/sighting arrows before the first round of the ‘Non-Elimination Matchplay’ commences.
The first Round shall be shot into either the top or bottom target face (whichever has been allotted to them). The second round shall be shot into the opposite target face. At the end of each round archers will change from shooting either up or down until all matches are completed.
The bottom target face whether ‘Detail A’ or ‘Detail B’ will always shoot first each end.
Each round will consist of 9 scoring arrows (subject to change) shot in 3 arrow ends.
Each archer at the commencement of the ‘Non-Elimination Matchplay’ will be presented with their ranking number card.
The master chart will determine who each archer’s opponent is.
Each archer will hold their single individual score card. ‘Non-Elimination Matchplay’ will not be double scored but the archer and their opponent will score each other’s targets.
At the end of each round all details on the score card will be filled out in full.
The archer and their opponent will determine the winner of the pair and the archer with the highest score will retain or claim the ranking number closest to first place, they will swap ranking numbers if appropriate.
In the event of ties, scores will be ranked by count-back. Hits, X’s then 10’s, 9’s etc. In the event of exact count-back a one arrow measured shoot-off will take place immediately after the match-play round. After each round archers will swap places on their designated target number. If previously shooting down they will in the next round shoot up. On completion of a round archers will wait to determine if there are to be any one arrow shoot offs before moving their target face, name and A & B.
Both archers will then place their name on the appropriate number of ranking on the master chart for the next round.
In the event that there are more than 30 archers in a division only the top ranked 30 archers in either division will be eligible to shoot for the major prize money. For those who rank 31 or lower you will continue to shoot but will be competing for a final ranking from 31 onwards and will not be shooting against an opponent but will be shooting the full rounds of the match play rounds shooting an accumulative score for the 36 arrows. These archers will be shooting their final ranking during the match play round with the differing bow type, please note that this may mean that an archer may be shooting in a different shooting round on match play day to the ranking round day.
In the event that a combined entrant is ranked 31 onwards they still have the opportunity to shoot both bow types and will be placed on a target butt where they can shoot top and bottom. They will shoot in both A and B details. They can choose to default in the bow type that they are ranked 31 onwards.
Medal matches
To be shot with alternate arrows.
20 seconds per arrow allowance.
Compound and recurve medal matches will consist of 9 arrows, 3 arrows per end. The highest ranked archer will always shoot first. Compound scoring inner 10. In the event of ties, there will be a one arrow measured shoot-off.
Combined recurve/compound gold medal match will be determined by the first day ranking rounds. Archers scores will be combined over the day with both bow types and the 2 top ranked combined scores will compete for the Combined Trophy. The match will consist of 12 arrows, 6 arrows of which will be shot compound and 6 recurve. 3 arrows per end, of each bow type. The highest-ranked archer will determine which bow type will be shot first. There will be no bronze medal match for the combined division.
The highest ranked archer will shoot first for all ends of the match.
